Madonna of the Rocks

Nature has a way of suggesting shapes in unusual places and it’s irresistible to interpret these forms and see them as something more familiar.

Like the wearing away of stones into symbolic shapes – like The Twelve Apostles. (Well there aren’t Twelve anymore, no doubt due to a more acidic ocean) or the ridges of a mountain that look like a human profile – like Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, which looks to have both a positive and a negative space profile.

I took some photos on Smith’s Beach of the lovely tidal area and found this rock formation which looked to me like a Madonna and child. I’m exploring this image at the moment and enjoying this abstract form with the aim to paint more formally soon – but maybe when it gets a little cooler!
