Indonesia Independence Day – Hari Merdeka dari Melbourne

The Indonesian community in Melbourne celebrated Independence Day today and we were fortunate to catch the flag raising ceremony in Federation Square.

The Day commemorates the declaration of Independence proclaimed on 17 August 1945 by Indonesian nationalist leader, Sukarno, who went on to become the country’s first president. Indonesia declared independence from the Dutch after the surrender of the Japanese forces which had occupied Indonesia since 1942. However recognition of independence was not recognised by the Dutch until 1949 following significant National upheaval and armed conflict. The date of independence was subsequently recognised de facto as 17 August 1945.

  1. I felt great happiness for Indonesia today, it was a wonderful sight to witness. However, I cannot but help wonder what is to become of this country. There needs to be a revolution, a huge shake up. Only then will democracy start to work. And, even then….( looking at UK and Cameron) nothing is assured.

    • Hi Lottie – Yes there’s a lot that could happen and maybe needs to happen. But – and it’s ironic – the ceremony was held in our Federation Square and that’s about as far as we’ve got – so although we like to feel we’re terribly independent and self governing we’re not a republic yet.
